Young adults have the highest rates of gonorrhea. Persons who have more than one sex partner, especially women under 25, should be tested for gonorrheal infection regularly, even in the absence of symptoms.
Women who contract gonorrhea while wearing an IUD (intrauterine device) are at a higher risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), since this contraceptive device allows the bacteria direct access to the upper vaginal canal. As a result, the IUD is recommended only for women who are in a monogamous relationship.
