The number of cases of syphilis had been declining for many years, but we’re now seeing an epidemic of this infection in many large North American and European cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Montreal, Paris and Amsterdam.
In Montreal for example, the number of cases declined from 32 to 1 case between 1990 and 1998. However, from September 2000 to July 2001, a total of 15 cases were reported, and from January to October 2002, 27 cases of contagious syphilis were reported. At Clinique médicale L'Actuel, this epidemic is worrisome, particularly because of its effect on the risk of spreading HIV, as well as the consequences of syphilis on people infected with HIV.
In recent years, the number of cases of syphilis has continued to grow, especially among gay and bisexual men. Between 400 and 500 cases are reported each year in Quebec.
