HIV and STBBIs

HIV and STBBIs screening

The only way to know for certain if you have an STBBIs is to take a screening test.

Whether for routine screening (symptom-free) or emergency screening, we’re here to help you.

We recommend getting tested if any of the following situations apply to you:

  • You have oral, anal and/or vaginal sex without a condom
  • You’ve had multiple sexual partners over the last 12 months
  • You have doubts about your past partners or your sexual practices
  • You’ve had sex with a person from a region where STBBIs are common, or you’ve visited such a region
  • You’ve had or do have an STBBIs
  • You’re pregnant or would like to be

For emergency screening, you can visit the clinic without an appointment every weekday and Saturday or Sunday starting at 7:30 a.m. You’ll be seen to quickly by our medical team.

If the clinic is closed, you can visit the Medical Clinic of the Quartier Latin, located at 1733 Rue Berri in Montreal.

If you find yourself in any of the following situations, don’t hesitate to seek immediate emergency testing:

  • You have symptoms that may indicate an STBBIs
  • You’ve been in contact with a person infected with an STBBIs
  • You’re worried because you’ve had unprotected sex
  • You’ve received a positive result to a screening test for another STBBIs
  • You’ve been in contact with non-sterile injection or tattooing equipment

HIV and STBBIs prevention

Preventive treatment – because it’s better to be safe than sorry!

STBBIs can be avoided. There are various treatment options for reducing the risk of contracting and transmitting an STBBIs.

  • Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP): a complementary HIV prevention strategy that can be used by HIV-negative people in a context of risky sexual relations.
  • Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP): emergency treatment that can prevent HIV infection after potentially risky exposure (maximum delay of 72 hours).
  • Post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP): STBBIs prevention strategy notably for syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea.
  • Vaccination: there are vaccines for the prevention of HPV, hepatitis A and B, and mpox.

When symptoms appear, diagnosis should be made by a doctor.
